There are certain school themes that translate well to any age of child, and Outer Space may just top that list! We did a tot school space theme last year and it’s fun to see how it’s changed for the nearly 4-year old. (Later on we did strictly Moon Preschool if you’d like to check that out, too!)

Outer Space Sensory Bin

Sand Number Writing

  • This activity was inspired by the moon dust writing tray by Stir the Wonder — thanks!
  • I used regular play sand with a little glitter mixed in. My attempts to make the sand black were too messy for our purposes. (I was impressed though by how far the insides of just one charcoal capsule went!)
  • I gave him the numbers, 10-1, to trace in the sand with his fingers or a pencil.

Planet Cutting Practice

  • This is the very pretty set of watercolor planets from Hip Homeschooling — thank you!
  • I trimmed these down for him to use as cutting practice, with the great built-in opportunity for a memory game later!

Space Subtraction

10-1 Numbers

  • I gave him a previously designed set of numbers with the intent of counting them down from 10 to 1.
  • Blast off! I used a rocket from this free space clipart pack for the end of the countdown.

Flashlight Constellation Cards

  • This is the awesome Constellation Activity Craft from Kids Activities Blog — thank you! I LOVE a good activity that can be printed in black and white!!
  • I printed these cards as is, trimmed, and used my Crop-a-Dile punch to cut the little tiny holes to make the stars of the constellations.
  • How fun this was! I gave him a big flashlight to project the constellations onto the wall.

Star Punching

Rocket w/Pattern Blocks

  • I had mentioned wanting to do a more open-ended pattern blocks activity. So I made this — essentially a blank sheet with clipart of a pattern block rocket, plus a suggestion to build a rocket!
  • Of course, there are a bunch of Wooden Pattern Blocks here to make a design.

Star Bead Bracelets

Alien & Space Pattern Page

  • I made this worksheet with the help of this free space clipart via Teachers Pay Teachers — thank you!
  • I made a page of patterns with some items missing, plus a set of extras to choose from to cut and paste into the correct spots.

Planet Cards

  • I again used the Teachers Pay Teachers Planet Cards pack
  • I trimmed these to sets with the pretty planet on the left, and the word on the right
  • I decided to present them this way to help put the words and pictures together.

Draw Your Own Planets

  • I made a simple page in Publisher with several blank circles, and called it “Draw Your Own Planets”
  • Gave him this page with the Crayola Twistables crayons to color some cool new planets!

Popsicle Stick Star Building

Space Trace & Write

Aliens w/Sticker Eyes

  • I reused an old activity here!
  • Last year I used the Silhouette Cameo to cut eyes out of sticky vinyl.
  • I gave him some blank paper plus a “sample” alien to show how he can draw an alien, then give him some eyes!

Constellation Lacing Cards

This week of school was supposed to go with an outdoor skywatch activity, but unfortunately the elements got in the way! Nevertheless, it was fun to go outside a couple nights of our space preschool week. What a fun supplement to our space activities!

  1. Oh my goodness do I LOVE these trays!
This year we are doing P is for Planet in our preschool class and I want to do ALL of it. (We only meet one day a week so I may not be able to do it all but I sure am going to do a lot!)
Pinned to my Preschool Play & Learn board :)
    Sinea ♥
