As part of our Art week of tot school, I was planning a beginner “sand art” activity. My plan was to use this awesome method for making colored sand. Simply grate some colored sidewalk chalk into some sand, and mix!

Yet, we would have needed to go buy some new sand, as all of ours in is in the outdoor sand table and I didn’t want to bring it inside. So, how about we try something we have in abundance — salt! Therefore, here is an easy way to make tinted salt for sensory play!

Easy chalk-tinted colored salt! Just grate chalk, add to salt, and shake!

This is very easy to do. All you need is chalk, a grater, and salt! I used a Microplane.

1. Grate chalk into a container
2. Add salt
3. Shake to combine!

You don’t need to use a whole lot of chalk, so start small. I found that it took about twice as much green as pink to get a nice color.

There are so many ways to play with colored salt! Enjoy!
