+ Big Baby Products

Though not completely related to the scope of this blog, I wanted to share a couple items from our days with baby E that were such a big help! I had planned on making a website about “big baby products” — as it is SO hard to know what works when your baby is just so darn big! And E fell under that category for sure. So, I will now use this blog as a chance to spread the word!

#1 on my list of favorite, cool, “worth the money” baby products is the one-of-a-kind Baby Hip Hugger ‘Classic’. This “hip hugger” straps on kind of like a fanny pack. We simply called it “the seat.” Adjust so it is comfortable, and your baby/toddler can ride along! Now while I was an avid babywearer (see below) the convenience of this product could not be beat. Plus, while my arms would fall apart holding him on one side of my body or the other, this centered him, putting the pressure on my hips rather than my back! I got this when he was only 4 months old and used it for almost 2 years. At a point he was just too tall. But wow, I love this thing!

#2 regards that babywearing I just mentioned. I tried a few different things but my favorite product was definitely the Baby K’tan Baby Carrier. I liked it enough that I bought two! I wore him in this for ALL naps from about 1 month until a year old. It was just easier that way! I nursed him in it, but also found ways to cook, bounce on a ball, and sit and work! It was a life saver, back saver, and not to be too petty, I know it helped me get back into shape. Once he got older I would still often wear him in it to ‘wear him down’ before taking the wrap off and putting him in his bed. We used the frog position pretty much exclusively and really used it just for sleeping; I used the Baby Nari when he wanted to be carried while awake. I often carried E in the Baby K’tan when he was as much as 32 pounds and it was easy!

Did you ever notice how many ‘seats’ you buy for a baby? It’s like you are just moving them from one to another. Well, as the mom of a baby whose swing could barely move and thighs were twice the size of a Bumbo, we had to be selective in the seats for E!

One that worked out well for us, actually that was only put away a couple months ago was the simple The First Years Newborn to Toddler Reclining Feeding Seat. While we sometimes strapped it to a chair, we normally had it on the floor. There is plenty of room for those big legs, enough that you can even snap the tray on as you are supposed to! Its reclining option is convenient as well.

As for a highchair, we ended up going with what many restaurants do – the awesome Rubbermaid Commercial FG781408 Black Sturdy Chair Youth Seat. It is pricey, and you even have to buy the tray separately! But it is plenty sturdy enough for a 40-pound kid to climb in himself. Again, it is easy to clean, and the black color we got is nice. While bulky, it is what it is. For how many times a day a kid eats it becomes practical.

Finally, another thing I want to mention is simply, Old Navy. While pretty much every other clothing store has NOTHING that fits E, Old Navy does. The neck holes are big enough, the arm openings are big enough, and things have ELASTIC waistbands! Plus there is nothing better than a non-skid Old Navy sock. I thank them for not assuming all kids thin out between 24 months and 2T!

Though I’d rather not, maybe at some point I will list all the products and clothes that didn’t work out for us!
